High School Intellectual Property Alliance

Teaching students how ideas become an impact.

IP clubs help students understand how intellectual property affects the work they create, use, share, and build on every day. Through practical learning and community outreach, students learn to respect other people’s work, protect and advance their own ideas through high school and college, and use that awareness to encourage innovation in their schools and communities.

Founding chapter Stevenson Intellectual Property Club

A student-built framework now being opened to schools and chapter leaders nationwide.

Why this matters

IP awareness helps students create with confidence and care.

  • 01

Students see how intellectual property already shapes their art, research, code, inventions, brands, and online lives.

  • 02

They learn to credit, protect, and collaborate responsibly with other people’s work.

  • 03

They gain practical ways to carry their own ideas forward and spark innovation around them.

Our mission

A national alliance built to turn awareness into action.

HSIPA helps students start and lead IP clubs, connects those clubs to one another, and gives each chapter a flexible framework of resources, relationships, and support it can adapt to its own school community.

01

Build practical IP awareness

Make intellectual property understandable before college and show students where it appears in the choices they already make.

02

Put knowledge into action

Help students apply what they learn through project clinics, discussions, events, campaigns, and outreach beyond club meetings.

03

Connect a national community

Bring chapters, professionals, institutions, and student organizations together to share opportunities and support local innovation.

What IP clubs do

Four ways students move from learning to leadership.

Chapters combine these areas throughout the year, connecting practical IP learning with student projects, schoolwide awareness, community outreach, and opportunities to collaborate and innovate.

Understand

Learn the IP landscape

Explore patents, trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, licensing, ownership, attribution, and fair use through relevant examples.

Apply

Work through real choices

Use case discussions, project clinics, invention exercises, brand challenges, and creator scenarios to practice sound judgment.

Share

Raise community awareness

Lead school events, campaigns, workshops, and peer education that help others respect creative work and understand their own rights.

Innovate

Turn ideas into impact

Collaborate with speakers, partners, other clubs, and nearby organizations to encourage new ideas and move promising work forward.

The chapter model

A strong starting point with room to make it yours.

HSIPA removes the hardest barriers to launching a club while leaving chapter leaders space to shape meetings, priorities, and community work around the students they serve.

Support available to every chapter

A practical foundation for launching, sustaining, and growing an IP club.

  • Launch guides, school approval support, and sponsor materials
  • Ready-to-adapt slides, meeting outlines, and activity prompts
  • Guest speakers and connections across partner organizations
  • Project, event, and outreach formats tested by student leaders
  • National activities and collaboration with other chapters
  • Help identifying specific resources, partnerships, or funding when needed
Launch

Build the school case

Prepare a clear proposal, identify student leaders and a faculty sponsor, and plan a credible first semester.

Learn

Create a meeting rhythm

Mix foundational lessons with cases, speakers, activities, and student projects that fit local interests.

Lead

Bring IP beyond the club

Run awareness efforts, support student creators, and collaborate with other organizations in the school and community.

Connect

Take part nationally

Share ideas with other chapters, join national initiatives, meet partners, and contribute to a growing student movement.

Partners

A network around student innovation.

Educators, public institutions, legal professionals, science organizations, and student networks help chapters reach expertise and opportunities that would otherwise be difficult to access.

Student leadership

Led by students, strengthened by every chapter.

The national organization stays close to the people running clubs. Chapter leaders help improve resources, lead shared initiatives, mentor new schools, and shape where HSIPA goes next.
